Are All Vegetables Equally Healthy?

Yesterday I posted about how you can tell which fruits are best for you and how to pick the freshest ones from the store. Today we’re going to talk veggies. If you read my post yesterday then you already know the short answer to the question in the title is no. Some vegetables are power players while others only hold a hint of the same nutrients.

How to tell which Vegetables are Best For You.

I’m going to start with color again — dark green when it comes to leafy veggies, and oranges, yellows, and reds when it comes to everything else.  Leafy veggies are especially important to a healthy diet, salad (not too much dressing!) broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are all part of this group. Go ahead, eat some.

Other vegetables which are packed with all things good – Bell peppers, Sweet potatoes (considered a super food with a high balance of nutrients) and tomatoes are all up there. When you dish up a plate, fill it with color. Not only will it look good, but it will be good for you.

Carrots, peas, and corn are starchier veggies that don’t offer big benefit to your health. They’re not bad; they’re just not the best things you could choose. Here are some other veggies with not much going on – Iceberg lettuce, artichoke, and peeled cucumber.

Picking the Freshest Veggies

There aren’t as many tips when it comes to buying vegetables, most of the time you can tell by sight whether something is good or bad, but there are few tricks for picking the best food.

Avocados should be picked based on feel. If you squish one and it’s too hard it will need a few days to ripen. If it’s too soft it will be brown on the inside.

Tomatoes should also feel firm, but not hard to the touch.

Cucumbers can sometimes have an oily taste; make sure the skin isn’t overly smooth. The roughness will bring the taste factor up and the peel will be enjoyed more.

I hope you found some insights to better a diet here. Happy eating!
